Rare Vintage 1954 McCoy Chief Pontiac Indian Head Cookie Jar - Blank Neck - Birchwood Glaze

Overview

Up for sale is a highly collectible and authentic McCoy Pottery Chief Pontiac Indian Head Cookie Jar. This particular piece is a fantastic example of mid-century American ceramics, dating back to its debut year of 1954. Measuring approximately 11 inches tall, this jar features the desirable "Decorated Birchwood" glaze, a wiped-glaze technique that gives the ceramic a rustic, dark charcoal woodgrain appearance.

The Rare "Blank Neck" Feature

This jar is the early production "blank neck" version, which lacks the embossed word "COOKIES" under the chin found on later models.

• History: This design was originally created as a promotional item for Pontiac Motors (General Motors).

• Significance: When the automotive partnership didn't move forward, McCoy released the design to the public. The earliest versions remained "blank," making them a favorite for collectors seeking the original intended look of the Chief Pontiac sculpt before it was formally labeled as a kitchen canister.

Condition Details

• Paint: Retains a significant amount of the original "cold paint" accents in red and yellow on the headdress and face. As this paint was applied after firing, finding a jar with this much pigment intact is a major plus.

• Glaze: Features the classic mid-century crazing (fine spiderweb lines in the glaze), which is standard and expected for McCoy pieces of this age.

• Markings: Authentically marked with the raised "McCoy" signature on the base, characteristic of the 1954–1956 production era.

• Integrity: Please refer to the photos for a close-up look at the rim and base. (Note: Mention any specific chips or cracks here if you find them).
