The tape guide roller on a tape recorder requires replacement when exhibiting the following issues:

1. Rubber aging, deformation, or cracking

The outer layer of the tape guide roller is made of rubber. After prolonged use, it may age due to oxidation, uneven stress, or a humid environment, causing the surface to become sticky, hardened, cracked, or lose elasticity. This reduces friction, leading to tape slippage, unstable tape transport, intermittent audio, and tape jamming.

2. Tape wheel slippage or excessive noise

A deteriorated tape wheel fails to grip the tape effectively, preventing the drive shaft from properly advancing the tape and causing “free-spinning.” Additionally, a deformed tape wheel may generate abnormal vibrations and noise during rotation, degrading playback quality.

3. Deteriorated sound quality, muffled audio, or intermittent playback

The condition of the tape wheel directly impacts tape transport stability. If the tape deck's pickup head reads signals inconsistently, resulting in muddy highs and weak bass, it's likely caused by uneven tape speed due to worn pressure rollers. Replacing them often significantly restores audio clarity.

‌4. Magnetic particles or grime adhering to the pressure roller surface

Over time, the pressure roller surface easily attracts magnetic particles and dust, forming sludge-like residue that reduces friction performance. While cleaning may help temporarily, if the rubber is worn or deformed, cleaning won't resolve the issue fundamentally—replacement is necessary.

‌5. Abnormal pressure or misalignment of the tape pressure roller

If the tape pressure roller is misaligned with the main drive shaft or its pressure falls outside the 300–500 gram range, it can cause tape misalignment, tape jamming, or even damage to the tape heads. If adjustments prove ineffective, it indicates structural damage to the tape pressure roller, and replacement is recommended.

‌6. Extended Period of Non-Use‌

Tape clamp rollers and motor belts in long-idle tape recorders tend to age and harden. Even without visible damage, their performance may have significantly deteriorated. Inspect and consider replacement before reactivating the device.
