Plate 5 (of 6) illustrating the Gilbert Seldes version of the Aristophanes play Lysistrata printed by Roger Lacouriere, Paris. One of Picasso's six etchings designed as illustrations for Aristophanes’ Lysistrata In 1934, George Macey commissioned Pablo Picasso to illustrate a special edition of Aristophanes’s Lysistrata — a Greek comedy about a woman who sets out to end the Peloponnesian War by convincing her countrywomen to withhold sex from their war-bound husbands and lovers. Macey’s edition, originally published in 1934 by the Limited Editions Club included six original etchings by the celebrated artist and 34 line block reproductions of the drawings. Picasso’s signature style of simple, elegant lines and expressive sensuality seemed to be a perfect fit for the ancient classic, which, though comedic in nature, also offered a prescient backdrop for Picasso’s own anti-war paintings a few years later. The Heritage Press was an imprint of George Macy Companies, Ltd. From 1937 to 1982 they reprinted classic volumes previously published by the more exclusive Limited Editions Club: "Deux Vieux au Bord de la Mer” from Aristophanes, Lysistrata, original published by The Limited Editions Club, New York, 1934, in an edition of 1500.
