This rare, authentic Zarafasaura oceanis tooth fossil originates from the Late Cretaceous seas of Morocco’s Khouribga region and is approximately 70 million years old. Zarafasaura, a long-necked plesiosaur, was a formidable marine reptile that thrived in the prehistoric oceans, using its slender, conical teeth to catch fish and other marine prey. This particular 5 cm tooth is a well-preserved example of this fascinating sea creature.
Plesiosaurs belonged to the Plesiosauria order, a group of marine reptiles known for their elongated necks, streamlined bodies, and powerful flippers, which allowed them to glide effortlessly through the water. Zarafasaura oceanis, one of the last plesiosaurs before the mass extinction event, could grow up to 8 meters (26 feet) in length, preying on fish, squid, and other sea life. Its teeth were adapted for gripping slippery prey, making it an efficient predator of the ancient seas.
