Maki-e is the art of Japanese lacquer painting, renowned for its beauty and artistry. The Pelikan “Kingfisher” Maki-e fountain pen employs Togidashi-Taka-Maki-e, combining both Taka-Maki-e and Togidashi-Maki-e techniques.
Kingfishers are small birds that live near water and have long, dagger-like beaks. Most kingfishers have bright plumage, with green and blue being the most common colors.
In Japanese, they are also called “hishui” or “blue jewel” because of their vivid colors. Kingfishers can compensate for the refraction and reflection of water when hunting prey underwater, allowing them to accurately judge the depth of the water. The kingfisher is named after the master fisherman that preys on small fish and crayfish.
The fountain pen features a vivid depiction of two beautiful kingfishers against a backdrop of fiery red autumn leaves.
Each pen features the Pelikan logo on the crown, a limited edition number, and the artist's signature hand-drawn using Maki-e techniques. Fountain pen is equipped with an 18K gold two-tone nib and comes in a traditional Japanese paulownia box.
