Lake Huron, bordered by the province of Ontario on its easternshore and the state of Michigan on its western shore, is the second-largest of the five Great Lakes andthe fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world. First Nations people, including the Hurons for whom thelake is named, have inhabited Lake Huron and its surrounding watershed for at least 2,000 to 3,000 years. The European 'discovery' of the lake was made by Samuel de Champlain in 1615, accompanied by Étienne Brulé and their First Nations guides.

Lake Huron is fed by a number of rivers as well as the Strait of Mackinac that joins Huron with Lake Michigan. According to some experts, Lakes Huron and Michigan are, hydrologically, a single body of water: Lake Michigan-Huron. This two-sided water mass, were it formally recognized as a single body of water, would be the world's largest freshwater lake. This massive water system drains into Lake Erie through theDetroit and St. Clair Rivers.
