Beautiful antique Ottoman-era silver zarf featuring a finely worked undulating wave motif and elegant scalloped rim. The body displays a richly textured repeating wave pattern, a classic late Ottoman decorative element, giving the piece wonderful depth and movement.
The rim bears a later hand-engraved Greek inscription reading:
“Ζωρζίδης Γεώργιος 1951”
(Georgios Zorzidis, 1951)
The engraving was added after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and reflects the continued use and gifting of Ottoman silver within Greek communities. The surname ending in “-idis” suggests Asia Minor or Pontic Greek heritage. This presentation inscription adds a meaningful layer of cross-cultural history to the piece.
The zarf itself dates to the pre-1923 Ottoman period based on its marks and craftsmanship, while the 1951 inscription commemorates a later ownership or gift.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-appropriate patina, surface wear, and light handling marks consistent with age. The engraving is clear and legible. No major structural damage noted. See photos for best representation of condition.
