Chris Whitley’s 1991 debut stands as a stark, atmospheric blend of blues, roots and folk, built around his distinctive guitar work and raw, intimate songwriting. Recorded at Daniel Lanois’ Kingsway Studio in New Orleans, the album pairs slide guitar, banjo and open‑tuned acoustics with Whitley’s striking vocal tone. Themes of freedom, longing and human struggle run through the record, which has since become a touchstone for contemporary blues and Americana artists. This 35th anniversary edition brings renewed focus to a landmark debut.
