The Epson 78 series ink cartridge is a dye based supply for the Stylus Photo R260, R280, R380 and RX680, desktop photo printers built around a six ink system that separates the lighter tonal inks from the primaries. Each tank is an individual unit, so a single depleted channel is swapped on its own rather than discarding a combined cartridge with usable ink still in it. The carriage rides an Epson Micro Piezo printhead that stays resident in the printer, meaning the cartridge carries only ink and its electrical contacts and seats with a light push until the latch closes. These machines were designed for photographic output on glossy and matte stock as well as direct printing to inkjet coated discs, so smooth gradient transitions matter more here than raw page speed. The Epson driver and status monitor both report remaining ink for every installed tank, giving advance notice before a long print run begins.
