1900 reprint of Kate Field: A Record, the respected biography of journalist and reformer Kate Field by Lilian Whiting. First published in 1899 by Little, Brown & Co.
This copy bears an early ownership inscription reading “F. Josephine Sands, Boston” with “If borrowed, please return.” The signer is Frances Josephine Sands, a well-known Boston society figure who lived in the Back Bay and was active in local charitable and civic organizations around the turn of the 20th century. Her inscription indicates this was part of her personal lending library.
Also present is the bookplate of prominent American painter John White Alexander and his wife Elizabeth, giving this volume layered provenance connected to both Boston society and the American art world.
An appealing and historically interesting copy with documented early ownership, great for collectors of American biography, women’s history, and provenance-related material.
