Beautiful vintage Indian soapstone Buddha displaying the abhaya mudra, the gesture of teaching. Mid-20th Century

This hand-carved Buddha sculpture originates from a Northern Indian workshop, quite probably in Rajasthan, and been executed in richly mottled soapstone, steatite, with a highly attractive red and green coloration.

The figure depicts the Buddha in the abhaya mudra, the gesture of teaching.  He is seated in serene lotus posture with a finely carved circular halo behind the head, chakravartin in style, added as a separate element.

Condition: Overall  this Buddha is in very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and display. Minor chips and a stable hairline crack to the halo (visible in photos) which does not affect structural integrity.

This is striking decorative and devotional piece, suitable for a collector of Southeast Asian art, Buddhist material culture, or as a focal sculptural object.

Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description.
