Half cent, gray black shade, Newfoundland Dog stamp from the British American Bank Note Co. (Montreal) re-issue of 1898, engraved, no watermark, line perf. 12.0x12.0. Recess printed on medium weight, crisp, off white wove paper with horizontal mesh, dull slightly yellowish gum. Excellent color, crisp appearance, decent centering. Mint, never-hinged original gum. Sound, fault-free example of this iconic Newfoundland stamp
Based on a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and designed by Joseph T. Rolph, this was the first stamp in the world to feature a dog. Listed in the 2020 edition of the Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue by Walsh and Butt as NSSC 40a with a catalogue value of $25.00 US for a previously hinged mint stamp. Applying the NSSC suggested premium of 6X results in a value of $150.00 US for a stamp with mint, never-hinged original gum.
