Royal Commission Report on Mount Erebus, Antarctica crash - 1981 original, RARE!

Report of the Royal Commission to Inquire into the Crash on Mount Erebus, Antarctica, of a DC10 Aircraft Operated by Air New Zealand Limited, 1981 - presented to the House of Representatives by command of the Governor-General.

Very, very rare to find a print copy of this famous report outside of a national library. Definitely one for the discerning collector.

The Royal Commission to Inquire into the Crash on Mount Erebus was established following the tragic incident involving Air New Zealand Flight 901 in 1979. The commission, presided over by Justice Peter Mahon, concluded that the accident was primarily caused by an automatic correction made to the flight path coordinates, leading the aircraft to fly directly toward Mount Erebus. The commission's findings were published in this report released in 1981, which detailed the investigation and its conclusions. In his summation following the Royal Commission he headed into New Zealand’s worst ever air crash, the loss of 257 souls when Flight TE-901 slammed into the side of Mount Erebus in Antarctica, Mr Justice Mahon said of Air New Zealand officials, “I am forced reluctantly to say that I had to listen to an orchestrated litany of lies.”
