VINTAGE NIGERIAN CHAMBA TRIBE FORGED IRON GONG CURRENCY
 |
Available for purchase is a vintage collection of forged iron currency attributed to the Chamba people of the Benue River Valley region in Nigeria near the Cameroon border. African iron currencies were used for transactions between tribes. They also could be used for individual purposes, such as to buy cattle, consumer goods, or as a dowry for wedding. These narrow "clangers", "rattle rings", or "gongs" were attached to a larger ring. The set had great value as a group or the individual pieces could be removed for smaller exchanges. Forged iron currency has a long history throughout west Africa dating back to the first millennium. The convertibility of forged iron into other objects makes it an ideal form of currency. Since the pieces were shaped like bells and clangers, they could also serve as musical objects.
This particular set includes a wooden oval-shaped "ring" with 7 individual iron clangers. Each clanger also has multiple round rings attached. The clangers vary in size, but average about 9" in length. The wooden holder measures about 22" x 5". I'm also including a separate small ring with 3 gong-shaped clangers. I purchased this iron currency from the estate of a wealthy family that traveled the world and owned many antique African items. I believe this collection to be from the mid-20th century, perhaps earlier. It's guaranteed to be vintage iron currency from the Nigeria/Cameroon region. Please check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.

It can be hung on a wall or displayed on a stand. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.

Payment is due immediately after purchase. Virginia residents will need to add 5.3% state sales tax to the final purchase price. E-bay has also started charging sales tax in many other states recently, something beyond my control.
For international purchases, the buyer is responsible for all customs fees. The declared value listed on the customs form will be the final selling price of the item. I will not list the item as a "gift" to avoid customs charges.
