On offer is a new-in-box, vintage Puma Hunter's Companion knife, produced by craftsmen in the first half of 2002 in Solingen, Germany, and part of my collection of fine, handmade Puma knives, never used or carried, only gently adored. Its model number is 11 6394; it represents the second generation of this model and was released to celebrate 250 years of Puma company history. To my best knowledge, it has not been available in the USA for quite some time.

With the anniversary in sight, Puma surveyed its many world-wide customers to inquire which of its classic models should be redesigned to represent the company's tradition, and this was the clear choice among hunters, outdoor enthusiasts and collectors.

The resulting knife has a 440C blade of 4.25" length (107mm for you metric types) and a thickness of 3.7mm (or 0.15" for you imperials - Imperials?). The hardness checks in at 57-60 HRC, a good balance given its function. The bolsters are nickel silver, and there is a lanyard hole as well as a nice brown leather sheath. You will not lose this knife for lack of secure carrying options, but there are always folks who stick it in a tree trunk while engaged in some chore, leaving it behind in the excitement of the hunt! Overall, this handmade knife conveys a very solid feel due to its highly ergonomic stag handle. The notched thumb rest adds to the overall comfort of this tool.

PUMA was founded in Solingen, Germany, in 1769. The Solingen cutlery industry originated in the Middle Ages, with a first guild of grinders and hardeners receiving their craft privileges in 1401, followed by sword makers in 1472 and knife makers in 1571. Notably, knife makers were obliged to mark their blades for their manufacturing origin ('Me Fecit Solingen,' Latin for 'Solingen made me'), cleverly anticipating modern branding and marketing practices by a few centuries. PUMA reintroduced the Me Fecit Solingen inscription on some of its recent anniversary knives. Just some historical trivia, should you be interested...

I am focusing my Puma collection on some rarer models, so, with a tear in my eye, this one may now go to another good home!
