Rare Antique Charles 1st Copper Rose Farthing Coin 1625 to 1649.
There are a few variants with
this coin but I can only say for sure that it falls between these two dates. They
were roller milled in copper with a plain edge.
In the turbulent years surrounding the English
Civil War, which saw England embark on a series of battles between
Parliamentarians and Royalists resulting in the eventual execution of Charles
I, the country’s official coinage was chaotic. Earlier in the century, the
king, embroiled in political machinations as he sought to protect the
royal prerogative, appeared disinterested in the provision of small
denomination coinage. Instead, he awarded contracts to
mint farthings from base metals. With the death of Charles I in 1649, these
particular coins ceased to be made.
The obverse features a double
edged crown to the center with scepters inside a circle, around the edge the
inscription reads:
CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT
The reverse
has a small crown over a double rose, the frame contains the text:
FRAN ET HIB
REX.
As you can see from the pictures
it has a fault to one edge. The coin measures approx. 1.3cm in diameter.
A rare collectable coin.
Please see pictures for more
details.
