This set of 7 plates are in pattern number 256 by Davenport of England. It is a simple and elegant porcelain pattern, with gold lines and x's on the rim. I've seen this pattern with a logo of a Lion and anchor, possibly used on a ship, and others with hand painted floral and botanical pictures in the center. All the plates in this set are marked on the back with the crown over Davenport, Longport, Staffordshire. Some are in orange and some are in purple. Some plates also have the number 256. The orange mark was used from about 1870-1887. This lot includes 3 dinner plates and 4 salad plates. There is some variation in size; one dinner plate measures about 10 1/2" in diameter, one is 10 3/8", and one is 10". Two of the salad plates are approximately 8 1/2" in diameter, and the other two are 8 1/4". Some of the plates have a lot of wear to the gold gilding. Two of the salad plates have chips to the underside of the rim, one small and one larger. There are closeups of these in the last two photos. One dinner plate has a fine hairline crack beginning at the rim that measures about 2" long. There is a close up this in the third from the last photo. I found no other chips or cracks.
