These First Republic Mexican 1/4 Real copper coins were minted in Sonora, Hermosillo Mint in Mexico. The Mint Master Lenardo Santoyo was ordered to Mint 54,000 coins. Later the First Republic Mexican government increased it to 2 million coins. Only about 540,000 were minted but all in very poor condition. Minting of these coins stopped in 1836 as rhe mint closed , subsequently many forgeries were made with the dates of 1836 ,1838 ,1837 and 1840. This coin is not in the best condition and has no date visible, typical of the poor quality at this Mint under Lenardo Santoyo. Still a wonderful coin from the First Republic of Mexico 1824-1835. This coin was dug in a historic gold rush town in the Motherlode Region of California, making this coin unique with the rich history of the famous Sonoran gold miners who traveled into this region on their quest for gold in the northern territories. I dug this coin myself which was found in a small Mexican gold camp
