About Beppu Bamboo Craftsmanship

Oita Prefecture is one of Japan’s leading bamboo-producing regions, especially known for high-quality Madake bamboo.
Beppu’s warm, humid climate and abundant rainfall provide ideal conditions for bamboo to grow, supporting a rich tradition of bamboo crafts.
Historically, Beppu has been famous for its onsen (hot spring) culture, where people from across Japan came for therapeutic stays called toji. Bamboo baskets, tubs, and other tools were essential for these long-term stays, blending practical use with cultural heritage.

Unique Aging-Inspired Design

The cup’s exclusive color was developed in collaboration with Koyo Pottery, inspired by how bamboo naturally changes over time.
Fresh bamboo begins with pale green or beige tones and gradually transforms into rich amber and deep brown as it ages.
Similarly, this limited edition ceramic cup expresses this beautiful aging process, using kiln-reactive glazes that create:

  • Subtle variations in color and texture

  • Natural gradients reminiscent of aged bamboo

  • A unique expression for each cup – no two are identical

Over time, the cup develops a glossy patina and becomes more personal, reflecting your own use.
