Antique Handwoven Wool Prayer Rug Fragment – A Timeless Anatolian Piece
This exceptional piece is an antique handwoven wool prayer rug fragment from Central Anatolia (Niğde Maden region), dating to approximately 100 years old. Originally woven as a seccade (prayer rug), it now survives as a fragment, carrying the authentic spirit and patina of age.
The elegant mihrab composition and finely balanced borders reflect the high level of craftsmanship of its time. Over the decades, the darker tones—especially the deep reds and blacks—have naturally softened and settled, creating a warm, genuine patina that only age and traditional wool can produce.
Original Protective Hand Stitching: At both ends of the rug, there is original hand-applied braided stitching. These were carefully added by the original owner many years ago as a protective measure, to prevent edge wear and preserve the rug during daily use. We intentionally chose not to remove these stitches, as they are part of the rug’s authentic history and reflect thoughtful, period-appropriate care rather than damage or loss. There are no missing areas beneath—this stitching was purely done for preservation and has been kept in its original state out of respect for the piece’s integrity.
Woven entirely from wool, this fragment remains soft yet characterful and has been professionally cleaned. Despite being a fragment, it maintains a strong visual presence and balanced composition, making it ideal for collectors, wall display, or as a distinctive decorative textile.
