Rolex built its reputation by proving wristwatch-level precision early on, including earning top-tier observatory-grade results in the early 1900s. In the 1920s, the brand became widely known for demonstrating real-world waterproof reliability through a famous long-distance channel swim, helping establish the modern idea of a “practical tool watch.” Rolex later advanced everyday usability further by refining self-winding technology in the 1930s. These milestones shaped Rolex’s identity: precision, durability, and real-world performance—tested, not just claimed.
Ref. 16523 belongs to the celebrated Zenith-era generation that introduced the self-winding Daytona line in 1988. It is the two-tone (steel & 18K yellow gold) variant, combining sporty Daytona DNA with a more luxurious presence. This era uses Rolex Cal. 4030, a Zenith El Primero–based movement that Rolex heavily modified and tuned to 28,800 bph for long-term stability and serviceability. Many collectors favor this generation as a historically important “bridge” period before Rolex moved on to a fully in-house chronograph design.
This is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 16523 (Two-Tone: Stainless Steel & 18K Yellow Gold) featuring a classic champagne dial and the collector-loved “Inverted 6” dial detail.
The dial is marked “T SWISS MADE T” (tritium). Please note: due to age, the luminous material is very weak and may not be visible in the dark.
Overhauled in November 2024 by Montre (Japan), a long-established watch repair workshop founded in 1967. The service paperwork is shown in the photos. Gaskets/seals were also replaced at the same time.
