A four-armed bronze Avalokiteśvara / Lokesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, on a double lotus petal pedestal in the 13th century Majapahit-inspired revival style. Recently sourced from the island of Java, Indonesia.

This impressive bronze depiction of Avalokiteśvara / Lokesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, comes to us from a reputable British dealer who sourced it personally from Java last year on a buying trip around SE Asia.

Dating to the second half of the 20th c., it's in the style of the Majapahit Empire, an ancient SE Asian civilisation that flourished between the 13th and 16th c in what is now known as Indonesia.

Avolokiteseśvara is the embodiment of compassion, Karunā, personifying infinite compassion and the deep, active wish to relieve the suffering of all beings. He hears the cries of the world and responds to suffering with action, not withdrawal.

As a bodhisattva he delays final enlightenment to help others reach spiritual liberation, making the vow 'I will not enter Nirvāṇa until all beings are free from suffering.'

In practice, devotees pray to Avalokiteśvara for relief from fear, healing, protection and guidance in difficult times.
