Item Description:
Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago / 天使のたまご) is a legendary 1985 Japanese experimental OVA film—a visually stunning, near-wordless journey through a submerged, ruin-filled world. Written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, with original concept and art direction by Yoshitaka Amano, the film is widely regarded as an anime cult classic thanks to its dreamlike atmosphere, minimal dialogue, and dense symbolic imagery (including recurring Biblical motifs).

Unlike conventional anime storytelling, Angel’s Egg leans heavily into visual poetry: lingering shots of architecture, shadow, rain, and silence; a hypnotic pace; and an intentionally ambiguous narrative. The film’s reputation grew over time precisely because it invites interpretation—faith, memory, loss, and meaning are suggested rather than explained. Today it’s often celebrated as one of Oshii’s most personal and distinctive works.

Mamoru Oshii is internationally known for philosophical, visually meticulous works such as Ghost in the Shell and the broader Kerberos Saga (often blending sci-fi, politics, and existential themes).

Yoshitaka Amano is world-famous for his iconic art style across anime and games—especially his long-running association with the Final Fantasy series, as well as influential work connected to Vampire Hunter D.

Their collaboration here is special: Oshii’s contemplative direction + Amano’s ethereal visuals create a singular “art-anime” experience that still feels unlike anything else.

Animation production was handled by Studio DEEN, a long-established Japanese animation studio founded in 1975. Originally started as a finishing company, the studio notes that the name “DEEN” originates from one of its earliest works (Yuusha Raideen), and it has produced a wide range of TV series and theatrical/OVA projects over the decades.

Cult legacy & 2025 revival: Over the years, Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) has earned worldwide recognition as a cult classic. In 2025, the film returned to cinemas as a director-supervised 4K restoration scanned from the original 35mm film, and a Dolby Cinema version was also produced.

The restoration was highlighted internationally, including selection for the Classics section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival (May 2025), underscoring the film’s enduring legacy and renewed attention in its anniversary year.

Note: The 2025 4K restoration refers to the film’s theatrical re-release and may differ from this Blu-ray edition.
