Vehicle Description

By 1971, Ford's Mustang was as stout as it would get in size. Hollywood capitalized on this and car-driven movies such as "Two-Lane Blacktop," "Vanishing Point," "American Graffiti," "Dirty Mary - Crazy Larry," and "Bullitt." The penultimate of these films was "Gone in 60 Seconds." Not the modern version but the 1974 original with H.B. Halicki and its record-breaking, 40-minute car chase.

Here we have a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach I SportsRoof. This example was made in Ford's Dearborn, Michigan factory (code F) in July of 1971 and shipped to the San Jose, California sales district, (code 72). Finished in Grabber Lime Green (code I) with black trim. The pony's paint and trim are in overall excellent order; the engine bay is tidy; the body is straight and solid while the body-colored front and chrome rear bumpers fit tightly and look great. There's a large, black chin spoiler up front and a matching rear wing on the trunk. The trunk is clean and includes an additional Magnum 500 spare with a fresh spare tire along with the correct vinyl trunk mat and spare tire cover. Besides the original Mach 1 painted in a factory color, it has the correct Mach 1 black side stripes and hood paint treatment. The blacked-out honeycomb front and rear treatments, dual sport rearview mirrors, amber sports lights and NACA-style hood scoops finish out muscular styling that is unique only to the Mach 1.

This Mustang rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/As white letter tires, size 235/60R15. Each tire is mounted to fresh Magnum 500 chrome factory wheels. The tires and wheels are all in very good condition.

Under the car's counterbalanced hood is a 351 CID Cleveland V-8 engine (VIN code M) breathing via a custom dual exhaust with a H-pipe that flows through a set of Flowmaster mufflers into tailpipes that exit in the correct factory rear cutouts with chrome tips. Back in the engine bay, a high-performance four-barrel carburetor with an aluminum dual-plane intake tops this set-up. A Comp Cams camshaft adds some rumble through the aluminized headers and a Comp Cams vacuum canister and captures an extra shot of vacuum for the power brakes with this big cam. This hot set-up is kept cool with a new copper/brass four-core radiator with a factory fan shroud, new cooling hoses and an additional transmission cooler. A chrome open-element air cleaner and a set of aluminized Ford Racing valve covers add a little bling to this otherwise all-business powerplant. Backing this motor is a C6 three-speed automatic transmission (code U) and a 3.00:1 rear end (code 6). Driver convenience features include power recirculating ball steering and power brakes with discs up front with a set of airlift rear shocks to add a little lift to the rear suspension.

Underneath, the unibody frame and floors are unrestored but are clean with no indications of any rust through and have been lightly undercoated.

Inside the cockpit of this vintage survivor, the black interior has been nicely restored with new seat upholstery, new carpet, and new floor mats embroidered with the Mustang logo. Especially designed for the Mustang, a Grant 15-inch wood-rimmed steering wheel with Mustang center cap looks factory stock and complements the large factory 120 MPH speedometer and clock. There are center-mounted dash gauges to monitor oil pressure, water temperature and alternator output with an era-correct Sun Super Tachometer II that has been mounted on the steering column to watch shift points. A factory Ford AM/FM tuner with eight-track is still in place ready to play the classic '70s rock as you cruise!

Competition to this Mustang in 1971 included AMC's Javelin, Chevrolet's Camaro, Dodge's Challenger, Mercury's Cougar, Plymouth's Barracuda and Pontiac's Firebird.

This groovy Mustang Mach 1 is a true head-turner and will be sure to draw many a thumbs-up as you cruise the boulevard or hit your local car show or cruise night. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check it out for yourself! Heavy!
