Boulder Opal is mined in Western Queensland. It usually is found in thin veins of Opal running through an ironstone matrix. If you break the stone along the Opal veins sometimes you get a layer of Opal on top on the ironstone - which can then be cut and polished to form a gemstone. The boulder ironstone matrix itself usually polishes up nicely and you often get beads, carvings and jewelry made from matrix without any actual Opal.

This is not top grade rough by any means but each specimen has some indication of actual Opal and is not all just ironstone.
