History of the ModelHMS Victory is best known for its role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 as Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flagship against the combined French and Spanish fleets. At the time, it was the largest ship in the British Royal Navy. Today, HMS Victory is preserved in dry dock at Portsmouth Harbour in southern England as a museum ship. It remains the flagship of the Second Sea Lord and is the only surviving ship of the line maintained in its original condition. Launched in 1765, HMS Victory was gradually completed with rigging, sails, and armament until entering active service in 1778. Two years after taking command, Nelson led the fleet at Trafalgar, a decisive battle of the Napoleonic Wars that secured British naval supremacy for more than a century.
