Gilded Geometry: Trio of Rosenthal Studio-Line Porcelain Vases by Theo Baumann & Tapio Wirkkala, Germany, Late 1960s
A dialogue in porcelain and gold — this striking ensemble of three Rosenthal Studio-Line vases from the late 1960s offers a masterclass in mid-century form, finish, and finesse. Designed by two of the era’s most visionary creatives, Hans Theo Baumann and Tapio Wirkkala, the trio unites clean geometry with opulent surface detail in radiant gold over glossy white porcelain. A rare opportunity to acquire a curated vignette of Rosenthal’s golden age.
The Ensemble Includes:
1. Tall Cylindrical Vase by Hans Theo Baumann – H 30 cm × D 7 cm A perfectly proportioned vertical vessel, its narrow silhouette accentuated by a finely detailed gilt graphic motif. A minimalist exclamation point for any interior.
2. Rectangular Block Vase by Hans Theo Baumann – H 28 cm × W 12 cm × D 9 cm With clean architectural lines and a wider façade, this form offers a dramatic canvas for Baumann’s signature gold decor — a delicate interplay of graphic restraint and modern opulence.
3. Sculptural Vase by Tapio Wirkkala – H 21 cm × W 13.5 cm × D 7.5 cm A hallmark of Wirkkala’s organic modernism, this undulating form nods to nature while embracing the precision of porcelain. Its glossy white glaze and subtle gold ornamentation lend it a serene, almost ceremonial quality.
Design & Craftsmanship
Produced by Rosenthal Studio-Line, the trio exemplifies the brand’s commitment to artistic experimentation and collaboration with Europe’s foremost designers during the 1960s and ’70s. Each vase is executed in fine glazed porcelain and adorned with gilded geometric graphics, screen-applied with impeccable precision. The gold-on-white contrast creates a sophisticated palette — subtle yet luxurious, refined yet expressive. Displayed together, the set offers tonal harmony with formal diversity, ideal for modernist interiors, eclectic collections, or curated gallery walls.
About the Designers
Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was a Swiss-German industrial designer known for his precise, purist aesthetic. A longtime collaborator with Rosenthal, his porcelain work is prized for its restrained elegance and technical clarity. His designs translate architectural modernism into tableware and decorative arts. Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985), a Finnish pioneer of organic design, brought a poetic sensibility to functional objects. Best known for his work in glass and wood, Wirkkala’s contributions to Rosenthal included some of the most sculptural and emotionally resonant porcelain forms of the postwar period.
Condition
All three vases are in very good to excellent vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Minimal signs of age and wear consistent with careful handling and display. The gold decoration is crisp and intact, with only negligible surface wear if any. Each vase is marked with the original Rosenthal Studio-Line stamp on the base.
