The medical troops of the USSR during the Cold War and the Afghan War played a vital role in saving the lives of soldiers and maintaining the combat readiness of the army. They provided first aid on the battlefield, evacuated the wounded, treated in field hospitals, and returned soldiers to service. The doctors worked in the most difficult conditions - under fire, in the mountains, with a lack of equipment and medicines.

During the Afghan War, their tasks included organizing medical posts in garrisons and in the field, supporting combat operations, and providing assistance directly on the line of fire. The doctors often saved the wounded during battles, risking their own lives, and often became the only hope for wounded soldiers.

A soldier-medic could be awarded the Order of the Red Star for exceptional courage and self-sacrifice - for example, for carrying the wounded out of fire, providing assistance under fire, organizing the rescue of comrades in critical situations or saving the lives of a large number of fighters in field conditions. The award could also be presented for exemplary performance of combat missions during evacuation, work under fire or participation in combat raids.

The Order of the Red Star was considered one of the most honorable military awards of the USSR. During the Afghan war, it had a special meaning - it was awarded not "for service", but for personal courage and real actions in battle. For a soldier-medic, it was a sign of true heroism, recognition that he was not only doing his duty, but also saving the lives of others, risking his own.
