A rare first edition (second printing, from 1895) of Celia Thaxter's Island Garden, in the original decorative cream colored and gilt embossed binding (designed by Sarah Wyman Whitman).  Color plates with printed tissue guards designed by impressionist painter Frederick Childe Hassam.  The cover is in surprisingly near fine condition with very minimal wear from age.  Inside, there are two small sections loose from the binding and gently tucked back in (could be possible to repair, or left alone) - a section from the title pages and one plate near the middle (alongside page 61, which has some darkening to the page from a former newspaper clipping found inside).  In the back, there are several newspaper clippings and a short pamphlet about Celia Thaxter tastefully affixed to the pages.  Light weakening to the rear hinge.  Features an armorial bookplate from the library of Annie Edgerly Thayer (from a grand estate called "Thayercrest" in Farmington, New Hampshire, which also had an elaborate garden of its own).

A beautiful copy of in "gift quality" condition.  See pictures for a closer look!
