Born in 1919, Boleslaw Ostrowski grew up outside of Dubno, near the then border with

Revolutionary Russia.

Twenty years later, the Polish nation was invaded by both Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet

Union.  His sister deported to the GULAG, Ostrowski found himself conscripted into the Red Army

Trained as a signaler, Ostrowski’s unit was shattered as it moved to counter the Nazi invasion of

its former Soviet “ally.”

Most Poles were soon withdrawn from front line service, and were formed into military labor

battalions.

After a negotiated treaty a Polish Army was raised, and Ostrowski began a trek across Russia,

that would take him half-way around the world to Scotland, where he trained as a paratrooper.

From there he went on to take a critical part in the battle of Arnhem....
