To dive deeper into the history and science of agatized coral, keep reading below.

Florida agatized coral geodes are rare one of a kind and visually striking fossil specimens formed when ancient coral skeletons were gradually replaced by silica-rich minerals, predominantly chalcedony. This process, known as silicification, occurred over millions of years, transforming the original calcium carbonate structures into colorful geodes lined with agate or quartz crystals.

These fossils date back to the Oligocene to Miocene epochs, approximately 38 to 25 million years ago, and are primarily found in the Hawthorn Group sediments of Florida. Notable locations include the Withlacoochee, Suwannee, and Econfina rivers, as well as the Tampa Bay area.

Designated as Florida’s state stone in 1979, agatized coral is highly prized by collectors for its unique formation and vibrant patterns. Its rarity and aesthetic appeal make it a significant geological treasure, offering insights into ancient marine environments and the fossilization process.
