Southern Mansion

Cape May, New Jersey

Built in 1863

One of the most well-known historic Victorian homes in Cape May is the George Allen House, also known to most as Southern Mansion. Originally a residential home built in 1863 owned by a wealthy industrialist, George Allen.

Allen, built an American villa of bracket, post and beam on the island of Cape May. Designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Samuel Sloan, and constructed by Henri Phillipi. This seaside palace was used by Allen and his descendants as a country estate for the next 83 years.

They had huge parties here and entertained plenty of celebrities – The Prince of Wales, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Gene Tunney the boxer, Will Rogers and other notable names. During Prohibition they would bring the alcohol off the beaches from Cape May Point. That’s what this house was for, parties and entertaining!
