Guys, feast your eyes on one of the most astonishing original Hodaka Originals we've ever showcased here at the New England Motorcycle Museum. This 1972 Hodaka Wombat 125, a street-legal on-/off-road Enduro, is as close to a brand-new Wombat as you will find anywhere on planet Earth.
This is not a restoration.
Please watch The video above for details
This is cucumber status—untouched, unmolested, and preserved exactly as it rolled out of the showroom 52 years ago.
With 227.6 original miles (trip meter 227.1) and nearly every factory component intact,
this machine is collector-grade in every respect.
It comes directly from the elite Roy Thacker Collection, the same extraordinary 93-motorcycle assemblage that produced some of the finest originals and restorations ever to pass through our hands. When I first saw this bike, I thought it was a high-level Bill Bucholz restoration… but no—Roy smiled and told me, “Ken, it’s all original.”
Unlike most Wombats—ridden into the ground by kids and hammered mercilessly—this one was pampered its entire life. Nearly every component on this bike is the one it left the factory with:
Original chrome fuel tank
Original decals (including the iconic Wombat graphic)
Original saddle
Original chrome fenders
Original chrome luggage rack & toolbox
Original headlight & taillight assembly
Original chrome fork tubes, fork lowers & rims
Original engine, never opened
Original controls (one lever updated to match spec)
Original sprocket (paired with new chain)
Original tank badge & cap
At 53 years old, the chrome alone is jaw-dropping—bright, clean, and showing very little aging or wear. The tank badge, toolbox, rack, and spark arrester assembly are all extremely rare to find in this untouched condition.
To keep the bike roadworthy and safe, we performed a full Preservation Service, replacing only items that commonly deteriorate with age:
New trials tires (superb ride, fantastic grip)
New tubes
New Gold chain
New fuel lines & New inline filter
Carb cleaned & tuned
Tank flushed & cleaned
Fresh VP ethanol-free fuel
That’s it. No repaint. No re-plating. No restoration.
Just respectful preservation.
The upgraded rear shocks appear period-correct and improve ride quality without affecting originality.
We filmed a cold-start riding demo in ~30° weather. The bike fired, idled, and pulled flawlessly.
Engine is unopened, original piston & crank
Perfect compression
Transmission shifts crisp
Clutch action is smooth
Carburetion is spot-on
Brakes operate as new
Handles beautifully on the new trials tires
This is what a Wombat feels like when it's not worn out—when it hasn't spent decades being abused. You simply cannot restore the “new bike feel” back into a machine once it's been turned into a proverbial pickle. This one is still a cucumber.
This is the street-legal Wombat 125, complete with:
Keyed ignition
Street-legal lighting
Plate bracket
Factory spark arrester
Most Wombats were off-road only—and those that were street legal usually didn’t survive. This one is the exception: a true antique Enduro in investment-grade condition.
Roy is a sophisticated multi-millionaire collector with a 250-acre estate who bought only top-tier machines. He originally acquired this Wombat with around 40 miles on it, added fewer than 200 miles, and preserved it as a pristine example of Hodaka’s golden age.
Bikes of this caliber simply do not come onto the market.
Everywhere you look, the bike presents as nearly new:
Chrome tank shines like a mirror
Chrome pipe with original Hodaka Krisman spark arrester is stunning
Engine cases appear factory-fresh
Pegs, shifter, hardware, and fasteners look new
Original decals in remarkable condition
Chrome toolbox & rack complete the iconic Wombat silhouette
There is exactly one of these in this condition for sale in the USA today.
