13917 Colon settler figure from the Baule Ivory Coast
In traditional African art, colons are anthropomorphic figurative sculptures of varying appearance, often depicting Westerners. The elements are constant: official costumes, religious robes, soldiers' uniforms, helmets, etc. As an expression of naive art or social caricatures, they usually take on bright and colorful colors.
However, among the Baoule, this type of sculpture also embodied the “ideal spouse” in a ritual context.
