ANTIQUE IMARI OZARA
SOMETSUKE SEIJI
LARGE SQUARE PLATTER
19th century
JAPAN
A
fine Imari large square dish or platter
with
Celadon glaze accents called
Seiji
Sometsuke or Sometsuke-Seiji
porcelain.
Sometsuke refers to the underglaze
and
overglaze blues, and Seiji is the word
for the
celadon glaze component and
ozara is a platter larger than 10 inches.
This
decorative technique was originally
created
by Imari, Arita craftsmen around
the years 1720 through 1750.
The
technique is unique to Japan, unlike
Chinese and Korean celadon pieces,
this particular style of decorating was
created
to achieve a ‘fresh’ look to this
porcelain
with this combination of
blue
(Sometsuke) patterns and the
sublime Celadon (Seiji) green glaze.
This
large square dish or plate is
also
decorated underneath and
has
a strong kodai (foot rim).
The
base mark we believe is an
abbreviated
Qianlong Period mark.
Mid
to late 19th Century.
Imari
porcelain is the name for Japanese
porcelain wares made in the town
of
Arita, in the former Hizen Province,
northwestern Kyūshū which were
exported to Europe extensively
from the port of Imari.
This
is a particularly fine example of
19th
century Imari porcelain.
The colours are vibrant and strong
and the mark to
the back is very clear.
CONDITION
There are virtually no faults to
this
beautiful plate.
No chips, cracks, or crazing and
just a handful of very light short surface
marks to the glossy glaze which
are insignificant to say the least.
The only part that shows it has age is
underneath on the carved foot rim or kodai
on which it has been resting for the last
150 years or thereabouts.
DIMENSIONS
It measures approximately:-
27.5 cm (10 7/8“) square
by 5 cm (2“) high or deep
It weighs approx:- 1445 grams
