The Witches by Roald Dahl. London: Jonathan Cape, 1983. First UK edition, first printing. Pp. 206. Original publisher's binding, gilt lettering to spine, plain endpapers; with unclipped dust wrapper missing price to front flap, making this one of the rarer export editions. A very good copy, with binding square and firm, with lightest wear to extremities, shallow bumping to spine tips and a little sporadic foxing to the closed text block and page extremities, with pages otherwise all clean and free of previous owner's inscriptions. In a very good dustwrapper with a little light marginal creasing and peeling, and a couple of minuscule nicks. A lovely copy, now placed in a removable, archival sleeve.

Partly set in Norway and partly in England, 'The Witches' tells the story of a young English boy and his Norwegian grandmother in a world where child-hating societies of witches secretly exist in every country. The witches are ruled by the vicious and powerful Grand High Witch, who arrives in England to organise her plan to turn all of the children there into mice. A dark fantasy, The Witches won three awards in the year it was published, including The New York Times Outstanding Books Award, The Federation of Children’s Book Groups Award and The Whitbread Award, and went on to be adapted on screen in 1990 and, more recently, in 2020.
