Many of these handcolored postcards are of the rainbow lights at the falls. The tradition of lighting the Falls began in 1860 with Bengal lights for a royal visit, but electric illumination was introduced in 1879. The use of colors started in 1907 when colored gelatin films were manually placed in front of powerful searchlights. The illumination became a nightly event after the formation of the Niagara Falls Illumination Board in 1925. The system has been upgraded several times over the decades, most recently to an energy-efficient LED system in 2016.


These are linen postcards estimated from the 1930s. There are 3 regular sized postcards and 10 small picture cards. None of them have been written on or posted.


Some of them have some bends in the corners but in good condition.
