ARTS & CRAFTS TOBACCO BOX IN COPPER BY ARTHUR JOHN
SEWARD FOR A. E. JONES OF BIRMINGHAM CIRC. 1910.
The tobacco box is made of copper in cylindrical form, hand
planished and riveted. Featuring the famous quote fashioned in repoussé Arts
& Crafts font, from Charles Kingsleys novel, ‘Westward Ho!’, 1855.
“THERE IS NO HERB LIKE IT UNDER THE CANOPY OF HEAVEN”
Arthur John Seward (1885–1937) was an artisan craftsman
associated with the Birmingham Arts & Crafts movement, Seward created distinctive
metalware pieces, notably for A. E. Jones of Birmingham. A selection of which
were retailed by Liberty & Co in London.
The box is unmarked.
In good overall condition, unpolished original patination,
liner in good order, wear commensurate with age.
