Genevieve Naylor, original black and white, 11 inch by 14 inch, silver gelatin matte photograph on double weight paper of a portrait of tennis star Althea Gibson, for a Look magazine article entitled "Althea Gibson (Olympic Tennis Champ)" published on November 12, 1957, in fair to poor condition as the four corners are bumped, there are staple holes along all four edges, and there is a tiny hole in the center of photo next to Althea. On the back of the photograph is a Look magazine sticker identifying the image and photographer.
Genevieve Naylor (1915-1989) was one of the most accomplished women photographers of the twentieth century. As a photo journalist, she was one of the first women hired by the Associated Press. Then she spent 15 years at Harper's Bazaar where she synthesized photojournalism and fashion to produce her unique vision. During her varied career, which included a stint with the United States State Department, she covered the Korean War for Look magazine as well as several assignments on Hollywood film sets.
