Today
(brief background)Today was a late-80s/early-90s New Jack Swing/R&B vocal
quartet from Detroit, signed to Motown. The group consisted of lead singer Lee
Drakeford, Wesley Adams, Larry Singletary, and Larry McCain. They were known
for smooth harmonies, street-edge beats, and romantic ballads – very much in
the Guy, Bobby Brown, and early Jodeci lane.1. Today – The New Formula (1990)
·
“Why You Get Funky On Me” (Top 10 R&B,
featured in House Party movie)
·
“I Wanna Come Back Home”
2.
Today – Today (self-titled, also known as the “white cover” album) (1988)
·
“Him or Me” (Top 20 R&B)
·
“Take It Off”
The
self-titled 1988 CD is solid but moderate success; The New Formula (1990) is
the one everyone remembers and still gets played in 90s/R&B throwback sets.
Both original Motown CDs are now collectibles, especially sealed or near-mint
copies of The New Formula.
