RARE TINIEST ANTIQUE

MOTHER OF PEARL FOLDING

PEN or FRUIT KNIFE

This is as small as they get.

19th century folding penknife or fruit knife

in miniature.

This fabulous little Mother of Pearl

handled folding knife is way too small

for the traditional use of these knives

 – more like the size of a charm for

a charm bracelet.

Folding fruit knives were developed from

folding penknives which were first created

around the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The penknife came in two different forms,

the fixed and folding blade that were

relatively short, normally about 1 ½” long,

and it generally had a spike at the end

of the handle which was used to spit the

 quill itself when needed.

As the penknife became obsolete it

developed into the folding fruit knife.

The posh versions had sterling silver

blades but the less costly versions

had steel blades like this one.

Stainless steel wasn’t invented when

this was made so blades are a bit rusty

and oxidized as would be expected.

The body of the knife is finished with

Mother of Pearl shell on both sides -

one side is more pearl coloured

than the other which is more yellow.

Still works as can be seen in video

but the larger of the two blades takes

a bit of oomph to get it out but I am

getting old and weak so it’s probably

not that hard for everyone else.

Cute as a button and quite a rare find.

CONDITION

In good antique condition overall

but as mentioned above it was made

 before Stainless steel was invented

and so the blades are steel not

stainless steel so they are a bit rusty

and oxidized as would be expected.

DIMENSIONS

It measures approximately:

2.8cm (1 1/8") long

It weighs: 3 grams
