Black Mass (2015) is a dark, gritty crime drama directed by Scott Cooper. Johnny Depp stars as James "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious real-life Boston Irish mob boss who ruled South Boston's underworld in the 1970s and '80s. The film follows Bulger's rise to power as he becomes an FBI informant (through his childhood friend, FBI agent John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton) to take down the Italian Mafia, while simultaneously expanding his own brutal criminal empire involving extortion, drug trafficking, and murder. The supporting cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Whitey’s senator brother Billy Bulger, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Corey Stoll. Depp’s performance is widely praised as one of his best in years—transforming himself with pale skin, receding hairline, icy blue eyes, and a chilling Boston accent—earning him strong reviews and award buzz.Tone: Bleak, violent, and unflinching. It’s closer to Goodfellas or The Departed than a typical Johnny Depp vehicle.
