MacGregor - McGregor Clan
Origins and Royal Claims:
Believed to be descended from Gregor, son or brother of King Kenneth MacAlpin (founder of a united Scotland), the MacGregors claim royal ancestry. Their motto, "Royal is my Race," reflects this pride.
Initially settled around Loch Awe, the MacGregors faced land pressures from the Campbells, a rival clan favored by King Robert the Bruce. This led to clashes and a struggle to maintain their independence.
The 17th century was a particularly brutal period. Feuds with other clans and involvement in political uprisings led to a harsh decree in 1603: the MacGregor name was outlawed. This meant anyone bearing the name MacGregor faced persecution.
Despite the hardships, the MacGregors persevered. Many secretly held onto their name, and the clan spirit endured. Finally, in 1774, the ban was lifted, and the clan was officially recognized again.
