All dimensions and weights are approximate.
This is a genuine antique Japanese wooden money box in a distinctive “loaf of bread” style, finished in black lacquer. Based on the construction, hinge style, metalwork details and overall ageing, it most likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, with a best estimate around the 1880s–1890s.
The design and workmanship show typical characteristics of Victorian-era handmade goods that were imported into the UK from Japan and the Far East during this period. The box retains its original metal lock; however, the key is missing. It is an attractive and authentic decorative piece, ideal for collectors of Japanese antiques or late Victorian export items.
