O'Donnell's Sea Grill menuin Washington, D.C.
From 1949
About this item: This was a restaurant that had everything for everybody. It was an upscale restaurant, but it had everything from breakfasts through dinners. The menu reminds me of modern day diner menus. One of the slogans at the top of the menu is "Try Our Popular Place for your 'After Theatre party'." A lot of thought and planning went into this menu, and the daily specials (this one is dated April 2, 1949), were clipped to the inside menu. I especially like the "O'Donnell's Appetizer Supreme" stapled in with a die-cut lobster in red.
A little about the menu:
- The most expensive thing on the menu is the Planked Steak for 2 Persons, with a bouquet of fresh vegetables, mushroom sauce and bread and butter for $6.50. This was a king's ransom in 1949.
- The Southern Harbor Chicken Pie (half chicken) with vegetables and dumplings, served as the Captain likes it in deep casserole would set you back $2.00
- Crawfish Norfolk Style with French fried potatoes, cole slaw, coffee or tea cost $2.25
- African Lobster tails, broiled or fried, with baked potato, cole slaw, tartar sauce, potato salad, bread, butter, coffee and tea cost a whopping $1.50
- On the special menu, Cold stuffed half Maine lobster, O'Donnell Mixed Green Salad and Saratoga Chips sold for $1.65
- Desserts ranged in price from .15 for a Raisin Cake to .30 for Tapioca Pudding. Apple Pie was .25
- An Oyster Sandwich sold for .40
- One dozen steamed clams cost $1.00
- French Fried Chicken Shrimp with tartar sauce, bread and butter, and French Fried potatoes cost $1.65
- You could get a Lobster Salad sandwich for $1.00
- A few food droppings on the outside of the menu, but generally in good condition.
This is a must-have for anyone who wants to remember how simpler our lives were in the late 1940s. If you own a restaurant, hang this on your wall as a reminder of a long-ago time before a soda cost $3.00 at most restaurants.
