[Yu Fujiwara (1932-2001)]
He was born in Honami, Bizen City in 1932 as the eldest son of Fujiwara Kei.
After graduating from the Faculty of Letters at Meiji University in 1955, he worked for a publishing company, but at the urging of Fujio Koyama, he returned to his hometown and pursued the path of Bizen ware. He studied under his father and became a potter.
In 1958, he was selected for the first time for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition.
In 1960, he became a member of Issui-kai and held his first solo exhibition at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo.
In 1986, he became a full member of the Japan Crafts Council.
In 1963, he won the Grand Prix at the Barcelona International Ceramic Exhibition.
In 1964, he was invited to lecture at universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries, and represented Japan at the first International Craftsmen's Conference held at Columbia University.
In 1967, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award.
In 1973, he received the Kaneshige Toyo Award.
In the same year, he was invited by the Australian government to give lectures at various universities.
In 1975, he received the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award.
From 1976 to 1977, he held the "Ko-Bizen and the Fujiwara Kei and Yu father and son exhibition" in France, Belgium, and Switzerland.
In 1980, he was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder by Okayama Prefecture.
In 1985, he received the Dark Blue Ribbon Medal and the Okayama Prefecture Culture Award.
In 1988, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea held the exhibition "Bizen: A Thousand Years and Now - The World of Fujiwara Yu."
In 1996, he became the first father-son pair in the ceramics world to be designated as holders of an important intangible cultural property by the national government.
Passed away in 2001.
He aimed for simplicity, clarity, and boldness in his pottery making, and created many vases and bowls, earning him the nickname "the king of vases."
He was also influenced by Kitaoji Rosanjin and excelled in tableware.
