The memoirs of those directly in charge of covert operations are of great interest, not only from a historical perspective. V. Nicolai, an outstanding German intelligence officer and a star among the leaders of the 20th-century intelligence services, left a significant mark on the history of German intelligence and counterintelligence. No book on 20th-century European espionage is complete without mentioning his name, and no book on German espionage without mentioning his achievements. M. Ronge also made a significant contribution to intelligence activities, and, in recognition of his services during the World War II, the Austrian government appointed him Chief of Intelligence and Counterintelligence of the Heimwehr in 1934. C. Rossel presents a transcript of lectures on the techniques and methods of working with agents, given by him in the winter of 1924 in New York at the US Army Reserve Officers' Course. All authors present to the reader not only unique and extensive factual material on the techniques and methods of work of agents and counterintelligence, but also set out their views on the theory and practice of the activities of special services, both during the world war and in the future.
