An antique bronze Northern Thai Buddha exhibiting Dhyana Mudra, the Meditation gesture, on a stepped lotus throne. 

A genuine temple devotional bronze, this dates to the  late Lanna influenced / early Rattanakosin period. ca. 1850 - 1910. 

This Buddha comes from the Northern / Central region of Thailand, the woven textile style apron with rope borders to the front of the stepped lotus throne showing a strong Chiang Mai / Lampang influence.

The bronze lost wax casting is much thicker than modern copies. The clay-filled base with a layered fill, outer brown and inner pale ritual fill, is textbook 19th c. Thai temple bronze construction, and only done on authentic temple pieces.

The patina is naturally grown, with smooth green-black oxide. The curls are slightly irregular and would have been individually carved out of wax. And the tool finishing marks around the ears, the robe edging and the curls are hand-finished, not machine-buffed. All of which support the 1850-1910 attribution.

Cast in bronze, the surface showing verdigris mixed with red and brown encrustation, typical of bronze with a high copper content, this antique Buddha displays a particularly appealing patina. Quite possibly the result of decades of ritual devotion on a small altar in an ancient Buddhist Wat.

Indeed, the inscriptional band to the base suggests this is a dedicatory votive statue cast for placement within a temple niche.
