An antique bronze Thai Buddha exhibiting Bhumisparsa Mudra, the earth touching gesture asking the Earth to bear witness to his moment of enlightenment.
This dates to early Rattanakosin period, and would have been a temple-donation bronze. 1840 - 1880.
This Buddha is seated displaying the Bhumisparsa Mudra, the earth touching gesture, calling the Earth to witness his moment of enlightenment. The right hand rests on the knee palm drawn inwardly, with the fingers reaching for the ground. The left hand, with palm outstretched, faces upwards. In this pose the calm and contemplative facial features are enchanting.
The monastic robes, the tall pointed finial to the crown, the snail shell curls and oval face point to an early Rattanakosin attribution, circa 1840 - 1880. The packed clay base is typical of genuine Thai ritual bronzes, not modern replicas.
Cast in a copper-rich bronze in a Thai central plains workshop, the surface displays a particularly appealing patina. Quite possibly the result of decades of ritual devotion on a small altar in an ancient Buddhist Wat since this would have been a temple-donation bronze.
