A Jali, or jaali, which in Hindi means 'net', is the term used for a perforated stone or latticed screen. In Mughal times, they were used to help lower the temperatures on the hot Indian plains by compressing or funnelling the airflow through the holes. Strategically placed, this increased the speed of the airflow and acted as ancient form of air conditioning, often passing over running perfumed water in marble gullies.

These exquisite early 19th century versions in sandstone have been reclaimed from an architectural salvage project in the blue city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, with traces of cobalt blue, pink and chalk white to the surface to prove it. In it previous incarnation, they would have graced the exterior of a haveli, or grand mansion, and been an integral part of the fabric of the building.
Today, they are destined to add a touch of Bombay chic to a contemporary interior when displayed as a piece of art, in much the same way one hangs a picture. Or, lent up against a alcove wall with tea or LED lights behind? Or perhaps mounted on a metal stand? Jalis from this salvage project also look the part in a garden setting, as seen in the last two images.
